This is one of the few coats of arms of Pope Innocent XI one can see in Rome, because, unlike his predecessors, he implemented a tight budget policy. His family is still one of the most prominent in Rome. At the end of the XVIIth century and until his death in 1713, Carlo Maratti (or Maratta) was the most acclaimed painter in Rome to the point that he was asked to design the papal monument to Innocent XI. It is uncertain to what extent Pierre Monnot, who was actually in charge of the execution of the monument, followed Maratti's advice, anyhow Juvarra attributed to Maratti the coat of arms of the pope. In the background of this page the relief of the monument showing the end of the 1683 Siege of Vienna, the main event of the pontificate.
